Pooky-Blue

Hi everybody! Hope your weekend is going well.

I'm here with you with a heavy heart, in great sadness. My cat, Pooky-Blue, suddenly became ill last Sunday. After spending the night in ICU at the Animal Hospital, jaundiced with a high bilirubin count, our vet recommended I take him to a specialist in Cary, NC, about 2-1/2 hours away. Our thought was to get him there for a feeding tube, but by the time we arrived he was too sick for the surgery. Within hours, his organs were shutting down, and I had to make the horrible decision to put him down.

The final diagnosis was hepatic lipidosis. I want to stress something to all of you with cats: please look at their gums when they are not acting right! Nobody told me that, and by the time they did, his gums were white instead of red, a sign of serious illness. Pooky went downhill fast, but if I'd known to look for certain signs, I could've gotten him to the vet sooner.

All in all, I know I did my very best for this special cat in my life. He was my buddy--my companion. Crazy cat lady? Maybe, but he was like family to me.

Any pet owners out there know how devastating this can be. I am a very sensitive person, who wears her heart on her sleeve. (A cancer sign.) This past week, it's been hard to breathe, walk, talk at times.

This card today is what I put together for our vet, Dr. Peter Dugan, here in NC. He always did his best for Pooky-Blue, too, as well as his staff.

I dedicate this post to my buddy, Pooky-Blue. I'm so glad I had you in my life. Good night, my friend.

(This is NOT his final resting pose, btw. He was asleep beside me here, at home, long before he became ill.)

  4. I know exactly what you are going through. Last year we had to put down our beautiful black lab, Ebony, and 2 months later we put down our sweet kitty, Buster. These are the awful parts of having a fur baby. I hope you can find some peace, time will heal! Thinking about you today.

  5. You did Pooky right here. What a pretty cat Sharon. I don't know what I would do if I lost my dog, but I know one thing for sure and that is that you would be here for me. I am so glad that we are such close friends, and again, I am so very sorry. I know you are still sad, but time will help. I am hoping that your posting of this will help you to recover that great loss in your life. Remember I am here and that I love you like you are my real sister!! God Bless you, and Pooky, RIP...

  7. I'm so sorry you've had to go thru this Sharon. Poor Pooky, I'm sure he was grateful for your hard decision and to have you there with him. So very hard to deal with and can imagine he will be on your mind for quite a while. I had no idea about the gums, thank you so much for sharing that. Our cat Spilly is 13yrs and extremely skinny. I don't think she will last out the year but she is very happy and has become such a cuddly cat. Look after yourself and I'm sending lots of hugs your way!!
